Sleep Well My Dear Friend

I write with great sadness today. I had to end a life, a life of someone who has been with me for as long as I've had one of my children.

Someone who has protected me, comforted me, made me laugh as only she could.

Someone who was my daughters first 4-H dog, won her a 2nd place ribbon out of 15 dogs in Confirmation the first time out.

Someone who told me that Jim was the man for me. You see Sadie wouldn't let men touch her at all. She always put herself between me and any man. When she met Jim she crawled into his lap and licked his face.

Sadie was my first Siberian Husky. It was love at first sight, really it was as she picked me by never leaving my side (shoe lace chewer) when I went to play with her before I bought her.

Sadie was special, very smart, too smart as most Siberian Huskies are. Self thinking, problem solving dogs are a challenge. She made me a better person by meeting those challenges and making her a better dog. So much so that she was Service Dog certified.

My daughter and I frequently took her to hospitals, and nursing homes, hospices. Sadie just knew what each new person needed from her whether it be her calmly setting her head by a tiny hand, or doing tricks and smiling that Siberian Husky clown grin.

She lived a very full and well loved 16 years.

So today after her doggie doctor told me she was bleeding internally and there was no hope, I kissed her good bye, rubbed her ears, whispered I love you and your job is finally done.

Rest well my lovely Sadie Lady you deserve it.

Why can't animals live as long as humans? It's too hard to say goodbye when we love them so much.
